If any of you know a web site for informantion on MAD COW DISEASE then would you tell me? thanks a bunch!!?
you can check out http://www.cdc.gov for more information, but in brief...
Mad Cow Disease is formally known as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. It is caused by a rogue protein called a PRION. A prion is not a parasite, bacteria or virus. It is a protein that has some strange properties. It is fairly rare. In the UK, which seems to have the most cases of Mad Cow, they reported 130,000 cases over FIFTEEN years. And that's in COWS. In people, its even rarer than that.
In humans, it's called Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease. In sheep and goats, it's called scrapie. In general, they're called spongiform encephalopathies because the priors take over your brain and whittle it away till it's full of holes. Like a sponge.
These diseases take ten years to develop and they're pretty much always fatal. Symptoms include mood swings, ataxia, speech problems and so forth. There is no treatment yet, no vaccine and no cure. Control measures include killing infected cattle, and avoiding eating beef. People contract the disease from eating nerve tissue of infected organisms. This includes tainted ground beef.
