can i buy a domain off of like godaddy.com or somthing and continue to use the free hosting?

As long as godaddy.com allows a redirect of your URL

You can forward the domain you purchase from Godaddy tp the URL provided by your free host. You set this up in the control panel on your user account on Godaddy's website one you have purchased the domain name.
