Real domain names like .com, .org, etc. require payment for each year they're registered. Some hosts may give free domain names, but they require you to purchase a hosting plan first.

There are also redirections, which you could kind of call fake domain names. Some of them may post ads on your site, some of them may not. The first link below takes you to a place where you can get yourname.tk, which gives you a short name but also forced ads.

If you don't mind a slightly longer name, you can also get a subdomain name (yourname.domain.com instead of yourname.com) - I personally like the kickme.to site, which is the second link. You can choose from a variety of cool domains and there are no ads.

With redirections, you host your site somewhere else and the redirection URL is just that - it redirects visitors to the actual site. The pros are that it's free, you can come up with a short and catchy name, and if you move your site you just change the location to which the url redirects, but the cons are that the uptime of your site relies on the uptime of the redirection site. If the redirection site is down, your visitors won't be able to get to your real site unless they know the real URL.
