apache is the best open source software out there... before installig a web server though, try to figure out what languages you are planning on programming in... html, php, ruby on rails, would all work on apache... asp, asp.net won't. They do have a plugin that will make it work but it's not reliable as running it on windows IIS server themselves.

My 1st pick for a free web server is Apache, u can download it from www.apache.org/dist/httpd/.
Another simple solution is using XAMPP, it's a bundle of Web Server(apache)+Intepreter(php)+Database(... server(mercury)+ftp server(filezilla).
The greatest thing abaout XAMPP is, u can bring it anywhere u like, it's a portable apss, so u can have a WebServer to go ^^. U can downloda it from http://portableapps.com/apps/development...
