Is it Java or Perl or Python? What is the web/app server being used? What are the OS and hardware platforms?
What server-side software does Yahoo run on?
Webserver : Apahce web server
Operating System : FreeBSD (it may be fully modified by Yahoo)
Server Side : Perl, PHP, C/C++ on server side. For performance reason c/c++ is used on server side. But these days it appears that they are using more and more PHP.
Hardware : HP based x86 servers . Yahoo also use Network Appliance file server or other hardware to store the data (mailbox and other user data)
Yahoo uses FreeBSD because of performance, stability and scalability. However yahoo is so big single HP server is not sufficent to take everyday load of millions of users everyday so they have box FreeBSD cluster of Web servers.
