I would like to build a similar site but on my own server. Are there any software tools similar to SiteMaker/Homestead that one could install and run on one's own server? Here's what I mean:
SiteMaker is here: http://www.moonfruit.com/
Homestead is here: http://www.homestead.com/
Web design... Like Moonfruit's "SiteMaker" as well as Homestead, but...?
Assuming you want to get this website built for profit, you really have to consider if it will be worth the investment to get such a project off the ground. The reality is that site builder websites have been around for quite some time and all of them have taken a relatively long time to get where they are. In the beginning, the sitebuilder sites used a flash component to allow users to build web pages, but these where not "real" web pages. Essentially, they were flash generated images that people could change to look the way they wanted it too. This did nothing for website owners that wanted to compete for business and list their websites with search engines because the website was not made from the valid code that search engine use to rank web pages and sites. In time, the sitebuilder companies got wise to this and used a series of development languages and programming tools to allow folks to build websites in real code. While this offered an improvement over the old flash system, users were, and still are limited to whatever the sitebuilder tools offers for features to include in a website. The reality is that sitebuilder sites and companies like them are struggling to keep pace. The reason is simple, people are starting to realize that learning to build websites is not only easy, but can actually be quite fun. For this reason, you will notice a whole host of HTML editors on the market.
