I want to run a home webserver. which software should i use?
If you want a home webserver, I would go with Apache, but I don't know if you meet the requirements for it.

xampp is a webserver package, you don't have to make it act like it, it is one.
You should research ports.

first of all...
if what you need is access to ALL of your files, you might want to consider PCanywhere, but for that, you'll need a static IP. (just like you'd need if you actually configured your PC as a web server). another option is "GoToMyPC" just run a google search on any of them, it will help.
you can run a web server just by using WinXP pro, install IIS and it's just like using Win2000 server, except that only 5 people can be logged in at the time. all you have to do is move the files that you need access to, to the "WWWroot" folder, that's it.
you will have to have a broadband connection like DSL or Cable, something that is always on. Static IP if possible, although is more expensive. if not possible, then just use "GotoMy PC" there is a monthly fee for that service though... but that is what will get you going.
