How can we control employee web surfing?
Proxy - ban lists are a good idea
That said - controlling surfing is a bad idea -
A smart determined emp will get access someway or the other and will spend more time breaking your barriers than working
the other type probably would not surf where you did not want them to anyway.
Honour system (a list of suggested surfing practices maybe) and treating employees as grown ups would possibly be a better long term bet dont you think

Simply block any website you don't want them going to.

Give em enough work to do and make sure they keep up on it. If they do that, then who cares if they use a little spare time to surf the web?

Your company should invest in software that will block certain pages. For my employees, if they wanted to go to let's say a walmart website, they will get a big red X with the words "ACCESS DENIED". That'll stop it

The best solution is to implement a proxy server and block unwanted content from the proxy.
