Can't log in using web messenger? [Imwebhost]

We have a firewall and proxy server, and I can't get out using the regular version of messenger. I'm trying to use the web version, but it says "logging in" forever. I have flash 9 installed. I have IE 6 installed (came w/ the computer), but it's not allowed to access the internet (IT has it blocked due to security issues.) Am I just hosed?

This is driving me nuts.

If the web version can't work, how about using a socks-ifying agent and an http tunnel? Anyone have experience with that? I asked the IT group, and they said that messenger wasn't prohibited, but it's not supported either and they aren't willing to help. :/
