I am using I.e. 5.5, operating system win. 2000
I am reaching the Internet through my home network attached to the cable companys speedy service. I can get to almost any web page I want except amazon.com. I get the stupid "cannot find server" screen. When I change the setting in I.E. to connect using a proxy server, dial into my work server, and then try to go to amazon.com; it works. What on earth is going on? Is there some special firewall interaction between amazon and my work laptop? I think the laptop is running blackice. I've run out of things to try.
Can't connect to amazon unless I use the work proxy server; all other web sites work on my laptop remotely
Sounds like you have a firewall rule that is blocking an IP address range that amazon may be in. Based on your comments above, I would have your system admin disable your firewall for a minute and then try it. If it goes through then I would go through each rule and see if there is a co relation between what you are seeing and what the firewall is blocking. I believe BlakcIce also has a logging feature that you can use to see which rules are being hit. Hope this helps.
