I want something like googlepages.com, but that'll let me put up my own handwritten HTML -- can't stand 'templates,' WYSIWYG editors, etcetera. Do such hosts exist nowadays?
I want to throw a couple of pages up on the web, free, and I want to write my own HTML. Possible?
Yes! there are many places that will host your web page for free. Just do a simple google search for "Free Web Hosting" or something like that and I'm sure you'll get a bunch of solutions. Many of them require you to have an address such as:
www.theirpagename.com/your_login
If you want to write your own HTML, I suggest finding a host that allows you to FTP to their servers. That way you can write the HTML on your computer in any text editing program and then transfer the files to their servers via FTP.
I have an account with www.freewebtown.com which I use just for my own personal use. The address is www.freewebtown.com/my_longin but since I'm only using it for my own benefit, I don't mind that at all. If this type of thing is what you're looking for I suggest giving them a try.

Here's a good list... Even that first one on the list would do what you want as it has FTP access to upload the files.

Why not use the free webspace provided by your ISP?
Most ISP's give you between 10 and 20mb of free webspace.
