Is one.com a good hosting company. Where are there servers based. Will my UK customers get to my site fast? Should I go with a UK based provider in order to offer my customers the fastest access to my web pages? Who would you recommend and why. Thank you.
How would you rate one.com for their hosting?
Short answer: one.com is not bad if your needs are very basic, and if you don't plan on custom coding or advanced services.
Here is a realistic appraisal. I am a reseller of hosting myself, a web designer and a former university engineer:
one.com offers services a bit better than some of the free services -
I did a lookup of the addresses they have available: they have several servers, and most are in Denmark.
They don't offer cpanel or Fantastico, which are well worth the while - if you have heard of them.
Their control panel is very primative by comparison, and it's main advantage is to allow you to quickly build a site from templates.
Lycos offers a similar service, at an even lower rate -
and Lycos has PHP5 (you can choose 4 or 5) as well as a mysql databases...
I am certain Yahoo/geocities has a similar offering, just to be fair.
Let me tell you, from what I have seen of Blue Host, and the number of Hackers they have hosted, I would prefer one.com,
but I think that Lycos is a much, much better service -
especially their rates for domain names, which are much lower than one.com.
