I'm starting a web site that will include research & commentary on a particular industry, as well as a forum and links to news items of interest. Right now I have a $6.95 hosting plan that includes 350GB storage and 3500 GB/month bandwidth. I have no idea how much traffic this site will get and whether my current plan will be adequate. If I have Google ads on the site, will I always be able to cover my hosting expenses? Are there web hosts that allow you to scale up to a higher plan or a dedicated server, rather than charging for excess traffic? Out of curiosity, how much do you think ultra-popular sites like drudgereport.com or perezhilton.com spend on hosting?

I'd love to see these oversellers actually get 2TB of traffic per month per customer they sell these insane plans to. Besides would you rather be treated like a number or a person? You get what you pay for.
