i think using the LAMP stack is very effective in learning the web and it's technologies,,
u need to know about web server like apache and iis
u need to know about xhtml and understand the tru purpose of html and how to code modern pages,,
look into php NOW,, cause it's cool and people use it to make whole websites with very little real coding,, also ,,
google on html kit one of my favorite open source apps,, many plug ins ,, many features it's and HTML/XML editor eventually u will find the languages u are comfortable with ,, the http protocol is rather simple,, and u will learn it mostly on ur route to webmaster,, it wont hurt to read up on the protocol though,, and APACHE is big,, also databases are very important in design today,, as well as
flash and other scripting for dynamic sites.
