ok this has been very annoying... I have my html file and it's images on my computer and I want to set it as my homepage for my website. My host is www.1and1.com. I have FileZilla and I can upload the files and all but how do I simply set them up to be the homepage so that when users type "www.mysite.com" into their web browser it comes up with my html file?

Doesn't HAVE to be index.html. could be:
index.htm
index.html
default.htm
default.html
home.htm
home.html
any of those will be redirected automatically as your homepage.

You need to rename your HTML file that you want your users to see as "index.html". Then upload index.html.

Yep - that is pretty much it - the home page must be named index.html
Setting up a website via FTP?
You have to have the domain name registered to you, you need a host, and you need the name servers pointed to your data space.
Once that is done, it takes about 24 hours for the name to propagate. You can check it by entering the IP directly into your browser.
If you have a site, this information should have been supplied or available to you. Getting it up and running can be a pain, but once you've done it, it's not all that bad. Hopefully, you have some tech support available from the hosting company.
Do not hesitate to use them.
