1. Persistent gall stones can lead to inflammation and infection of the gall bladder or the bile duct (cholecystitis / cholangitis), or acute pancreatitis. Treatment is by removal of the gall bladder, usually through keyhole surgery.
4. Ulcer simply means breakdown of normal epithelium, causing exposure of mucosa. Can occur in many places.
5. Stomach ulcer - helicobacter pylori
Venous ulcers (legs) - chronic venous insufficiency
Decubitus ulcers - chronic pressure on vulnerable areas in debilitated patients e.g. sacrum, heels etc.
6. In stomach ulcers, medication can prevent ulcers in vulnerable pts e.g. proton pump inhibitors. Pressure ulcers can be prevented by turning the patient, using protective dressings etc.
