I'm based in the UK and my son wants to create his own website. Any advice on prices and providers would be much appreciated! (We are not interested in the free hosts, we want our own site) Thanks in advance!
I need a domain name + web hosting.... Which one do you recommend?
Godaddy is the standard answer you're probably going to get. But if someone complains about your son spamming them or whatever, Godaddy will likely shoot first and ask questions later and shut down that domain. That's the horror story I've heard time and time again.
Not that your son would spam anyone, it's just that people might mistakenly think he is and complain to the web host or Godaddy (or both).
I'd go with Namecheap or 1&1. Namecheap seems a little faster in getting the DNS info propogated but that might just be my own weird experience.
In terms of prices and providers for hosting, I'd say start off with something inexpensive ($10 - $15 USD) but with all the features he needs now and that will allow him to easily upgrade if he needs to down the road (like more space, bandwidth, etc).
You might want to check out this site for more info on hosting. The web hosting recommendations are pretty solid.

Good luck to you and your son with the new site!
