i need a free website that will allow me to do that and allow me to make my own web address without the company name stuck in somewhere. can i just host the webpage myself using my computer as a server? i have Linux Ubuntu 7.10 running if so, how?
thanks so much
How do you put a web page on the web after you designed it?
Freehostia is perhaps the best free hosting service. They're one of the few who don't put ads all over your pages. They'll also let you use you up to 10 subdomains
(i.e. yourwebsite.freehostia.com):
http://www.freehostia.com/
If you want to host it yourself,
pick out a subdomain at FreeDNS
(there are thousands of URLs to choose from):
http://freedns.afraid.org/
Direct the URL to your IP address:
http://whatismyipaddress.com/
And host your website on port 80 with the Abyss Web Server:
http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/
If you have a router, you'll need to give your computer a static IP, and forward port 80 to it:
http://portforward.com/
As your ISP periodically changes your IP, either update your subdomain manually at FreeDNS' website, or have one of these programs update it automatically for you:

You're own domain name isn't going to happen unless you pay for it. The good news is that it's REALLY inexpensive... less than $11 US if you go with GoDaddy.
