With FTP upload and no ads or banners also user friendly as Im a new starter. Im also confused I know I have to pay for a domain name but do I build the site on a sub domain then pay for a main site later?

Free webhosts are not really good as they will use your site to make money.

if you are paying for your domain name e.g. www.example.com then you can use software such as microsoft frontpageexpress (which you can download for free) to do your website.

you don't have to buy domain name or hosting yet. first get used to building site using free host that doesn't put force ads on your free site. free host will come with free subdomain or folder. some free host has paid plan and they use their free services to attract new customer. when your site are almost complete and you are already know how to promote your site then you can buy your own domain but still maintain the free plan. only until you have consistent traffic you should buy hosting space. if you want my recommendation on a free host check out my site. hope that helps a bit.
