I have IIS webserver installed on PC and I connect to Internet through ISP (yahoo DSL). my pc runs on Win XP pro.
Are there any restriction by ISP (yahoo dsl) which limits us from hosting the site?
I have dynamic IP? are there any option where are keep updating my DNS or there any redirecting service?
I understand the virus problems if I have to host my own website, but I just need to identify all the steps for a learning experience and probably I will be keeping my site up only for few hours. (And I do have good firewall and Virus protection)
how do I point my URL to my machine IP? do I need any DNS server?
Thanks
Hosting my website on PC?
Here's a couple of issues.
1. You must have a dynamic IP or your IP address will change and all links to your system will break. You could use the dynamic IP but the first time you reboot, or loose power or lose connection the IP address is gone.
2. You need to have domain name assigned unless you want everyone to attach with JUST the IP address. This would be difficult with a dynamic IP.
3. When you place your PC running IIS on the 'public internet' you can be your system will be attacked and commendeered even in the short time frame you have it up.
4. If your system will be up and down for short periods, then you can count on always having a different IP address. This would be ok if you want to 'resend' the IP address to everyone that wants to attach every time you restart it.
