I want to be able to access my files on both computers I also would love to be able to access my email thru outlook on both
both computers are about the same and are running vista home
I was hoping to do remote destop but I finally discovered that you can not use a computer with vista home to be a host computer
What other options are out there?

You need to get a router, and hook up the computers to the router via RJ-45 cable (ethernet cable), or a wireless router, and wireless router receivers attached to the USB port of your computers. Then make sure the workgroup name is the same, and it should automatically allow you to access each other's "shared folders" through my network.

You can use a VNC program on Vista home, to access one computer from another.
