i have a domain name, i also up until recently had a paid webhost that went belly-up.
to configure the two i had to email the guys i got the domain name from and ask them to update the dns entry for my domain to the dns addresses i got from the web host - if i wanted to use a free webhost is the same thing available and does anything need to be done on the webhost side other than providing it's dns addresses to my domain host?
Setting up dns on a domain name for a free webhost?
If you are looking for a free host, first you will need to find one that offers free domain hosting. Most only offer subdomain or directory-type access.
I don't have any experience with these, but there are three on this page you might look into.

You will need to have the nameservers on the domain updated to the information that the web host gives you. The web host does need to add your domain name to their account. With any luck, they would have a web interface where you can enter the domain name and they will add it automatically for you when you sign up for an account.
Setting up dns on a domain name for a free webhost?
Let's get things straight here.
1) For every domain there is a registrar (not a host)
Some hosting companies are also accredited registrars (very very few). You should NEVER agree to a free domain. Just buy a domain at Moniker.com (most reliable company)
