I would like to send and receive email from myname@mydomain.com. I already own mydomain.com and do not wish to transfer it to a new registrar nor swap DNS servers, just to make the necessary changes to my MX records. Can anyone recommend a reliable, trustworthy and good value provider who will provide POP3/SMPT services for me on this basis, as it seems this sector has more than its fair share of sharp practitioners.

When you sign up with a new hosting service, you'll need to change the nameservers at the registrar so your domain name points to the server.
There are loads of reputable hosts out there.
I've used Bluehost and have no complaints. I've also used Kwikhosting and Netfirms. I'm about to sign someone up on Siteground.
Some registrars have hosting as well, like GoDaddy.

I use their services, you can use your own domain name by simply changing name server settings.
You can check email using either a client such as outlook, or webmail.
