I want to secure a .com domain name for my business but some opportunist is just sitting on the name without operating a web site. I have made contact via the host but they say the owner wants a riduculous amount of money to part with the name. Is there any way I can obtain this site if the owner is not or has never operated a web site with this domain and is asking an exhorbitant purchase price?

Nope you're seeing the effects of the .com boom. Some bum sold sears.com for hundreds of thousands if I remember right. Try to find a domain that's similar at least that's your best bet.
