Wat is a server?
Depends on a large number of factors. 3 important factors are:
- how much hits will your site have?
- do you need complex web applications?
- what protection against failures do you want?
You can run a server on a simple PC, but then you'll have little protection against failure.
First make sure you install an UPS (uninterrupted power supply), so you're protected against power failures (at least for some 30 minutes).
A next level of protection is to use 2 serial ATA disks and configure these as RAID-1, which means that the same information is stored on both disks. If 1 disk fails, your site still keeps on running, as the info is still on the second disk. In the quiet hours you can replace the faulty disk and the OS and serial ATA will take care that the information is again copied to the second disk.
But don't forget to take back-ups.
Even more protection will come from buying dedicated server HW with at least 2 processors, ECC memory, a redundant power supply, ... But at that moment you'd better have rather deep pockets.
You can use Linux OS, Apache with PHP and mySQL. This will allow you to create fairly complex web apps.
Purchasing an own domain name isn't too expensive, but managing your own internet connection is something different.
Not only do you need to rent a connection to an ISP (DSL isn't good enough), but you'll need a firewall, routers, switches, ...
But you'll also need people to maintain all this.
So unless you're a fairly big company, consider a hosting package or, if really needed, renting a server at an ISP. Given the questions you asked, I wouldn't recommend you to become an ISP at this moment ;-)
Best of luck
