I'm just encountering this news today and don't know what to think, really. I've re-read it almost entirely, since at first seemed confusing. The basics are these: The two owners on NEW TIMES in Arizona have gone to jail for writing about a subpoena they'd received at their newspaper (apparently for having been publishing critical stories about the County Attorneys' political ally, who happens to be the Sheriff whose deputies went over to arrest these two men)...
I was going to add a link to the story on this question, but since I went on to read the following, I just don't want to get too involved with this:
"Scope of the subpoena is unusually broad: It not only demands information from the reporters, but also information about all the online readers of the publication since January 1st, 2004, including their internet domain names and browsers and what other Web sites they visited before reading the NEW TIMES"!!!
Isn't this creepy to say the least?!!!
Violation of FIRST AMENDMENT? Of POWER? Journalists still in JAIL?
Certainly they shouldn't have been jailed for writing about a legal document which is part of the public record. Sounds like a reactionary response, with those in power using their clout, exercising the discretionary power they've been given over the past 6 years, as a lesson to the next ones they try to intimidate.
Unfortuately, America is on the road to fascism. That's the problem with any idealist political movement. If you're working toward some sort of utopia, it's very easy to convince yourself to make sacrifices along the way for the ultimate "greater good" of society.
Yeah, creepy to say the least.
