I need some help regarding how to register/protect a name and idea.

I have a website idea (already bought the domain names etc) that I want protect. How do I go about doing this and how much will it cost?

Hi, I assume you mean Patent, it really all depends on what the idea is and wether anything else is running similar, it also takes time to do, feel free to get in touch if you want over the website, I use an organisation that is free and really brilliant, however I am in Wales but I am sure if you are not in Wales then they would tell you of something similar in England or Scotland. To register the product go to http://www.uspto.gov. Patents are very expensive costing thousands of dollars. The more complex the product, the more money it costs. Your best bet is to get a "Preliminary" Patent from the USPTO. They cost $200.00 and will protect you for a year. And, you can do it yourself.

You can get a trademark on your name also from the USPTO. It's expensive (Several hundreds of dollars), but less so than a patent.

Now the bad news. Ideas in themselves are not patentable. Processes are. Suppose you invent a new drug. You cannot patent what that drug will do to people, but you can patent the process of making that drug. Or, if you write a software program, you cannot patent what that program will do for people, but you can patent the process your computer will go through to make that idea happen.
