How do i add my workstations to the domain...everytime I try to go into My Computer, Properties, then try to change the info from workgroup to domain, it tells me my domain isnt found. what am I doing wrong. I've named my domain on my SBS 2003 mortgage1.local and have tried to do the same for the workstations, but they never make tohe connection. PLEASE HELP!
Domain not found?
If all of your workstations are having this problem, then the server is the issue here. Check that the domain service is configured correctly, running, and that the firewall allows other computers to connect to that service.
Edit: I know you don't want to hear it, but are you absolutely sure you have your domain controller service set up correctly?
Domain not found?
Are you sure you even have a domain? (Most people don't!) ~
You are probably suffering from a misunderstanding of its meaning.
Domain not found?
Gee, where to begin.
Before you try all the stuff below, try using the NETBIOS name in the domain prompt instead of the fully qualified domain name. In other words, for example, instead of trying to join the mortgage1.local domain, try just mortgage (if that's the NETBIOS name). Sometimes one will work when the other won't.
Generally, each workstation gets assigned a dynamic IP address by a DHCP server. If you're on a small network, this might be being handled by a router on your network. The server should be given (manually) a static IP address (i.e., it never changes). The DHCP server should be configured to provide the IP address of the local DNS server instead of one located at your ISP (as is the default with DSL, for example).
