If I buy a domain name, and I want to design the site all myself from scratch, do I need or have to have hosting?
Domain Names (Do I have to have hosting?)?
Not if you want to set up your own server on your computer using Apache or equivalent. Lot easier to get a host and use their server.

well you can buy the domain name but it doesn't mean it's going to show up on the internet you have to have Hosting for the page to be displayable
Domain Names (Do I have to have hosting?)?
Only if you want other people to be able to see your site. The web host is needed to put your site on the Internet, unless you have your own server.
Domain Names (Do I have to have hosting?)?
When you buy a domain name you are purchasing the URL. So that when I call http://www.google.com a DNS server will return the hosting machines IP address.
Basically a domain name is like having your house listed in a local phone book. If you have your house listed in there people can try to come over all they want, but if you don't have a house(host) they will be coming over to see nothing.

Yes Jayden, you will need hosting in order to publicly display your site.
Your first step is to register a domain name. I recommend http://www.1and1.com as your host and domain name provider not only because of their excellent price to features ration, but because of their superb customer/technical support. To start off, the '1&1 Home' hosting package should be plenty. You should have at least $35 to invest to cover the expenses of hosting for around 4-6 months.
