Generally the terms are for a year, but you can get more. If you do not continue paying the domain goes into limbo for a set period of time, then gets released back to the public.

all domains registered in the US are ran through a company called VeriSIGN, sort of like the internet cops. Now when you buy a domain, you basically just rent it. Now you need to find a host, yahoo, godaddy, etc, and they offer the domain. Now you usually buy it on a yearly basis, not monthly, it would be a waste monthly.
So when you buy a domain, you have DNS (dynamic name server) rights to that domain, so you can point it to your web server.

U see every company say yahoo has a website like yahoo.com similarly there are othr ppl who need a website of their own so they may hav names like beckham.com etc.... All registerations for a domain is for one year after which you keep renewing its like how one pays for a preapaid card in a mobile.When the tenure is over u top it up or renew the contract.
