I bought a domain at www.web.com, are they my host?
I thought a host was someone who built your site for you?
What is web hosting?
Here's the quick and easy explanation;
A domain name, which is what you say you bought, is simply the internet address people will use to find your site online. My domain name for my online hosting company is http://www.mxdwebservice.com. With this information a person can simply type the name into a browser window and find my site. :)
A web hosting company is a company that owns and maintains servers where they store all the files of a persons web site. For everything you read and/or hear about web hosting, it's really just a large self storage company for electronic data. You pay them a fee and they will house your web site files and point your new, shiny domain name to the files residing on their servers for you so all the happy, shiny surfers can find you. Unfortunately, you still have to actually provide the webpages they will store and display to the public for you....
Thats where a web designer comes in. This one is an easy one, web designers are exactly what they sound like...they design web pages and web sites for a fee.
It is the combonation of all three services that make up your average web page or site.
My own company, MXD Web Services, offers all three services for very reasonable pricing. Domain names are free with the purchase of any hosting plan and plans start at only $5.77/mo...thats less than $70 for the year! We also offer professional web design, with basic rates starting at only $100/page...of course this is negotiable depending on what your site needs are. :)
